What is an evangelist?

Evangelists are people serving God in their local parish community and in the Diocese of Rochester who share their love of the Lord Jesus as a life changing experience.

What is the ministry of an evangelist?

Evangelists can serve in many areas of the church using their own particular gifts. This could range for example from working with children, in schools, in the community and in fact anywhere.

How do I become an evangelist?

What training is required for the ministry?

We can prepare and equip people who feel they are called to serve in the evangelist ministry. There are various types of training, which can be adapted to suit a person’s time and commitment. This may range from short group courses to the full Diocesan Evangelists course and is two years duration. Diocesan Department of Training Also click here to look at 'What Evangelists are doing'

Who oversees the ministry of evangelists?

The Warden of Evangelists is appointed by the Bishop of Rochester and oversees the lay ministry for evangelists. The present Warden of Evangelists is the Revd Canon Jean Kerr

How is the evangelist ministry organised?

How am I commissioned as an evangelist?

After successfully completing the Diocesan Evangelists course you will be commissioned at a special service in the cathedral conducted by the Bishop of Rochester.

What are area groups for evangelists?

These are localised groups, which cover a geographical area within the Diocese of Rochester and meet during the year for fellowship and support, see organisation chart.

What events are there for evangelists?

Events are organised within the Diocesan Fellowship of Evangelists and are advertised through a Newsletter produced by the Warden of Evangelists. Other events may be organised at local level within the area groups.

What if I need extra training?

You should speak with the Warden of Evangelists to identify where extra training may be needed which may be already available. Additional courses are advertised in the evangelist newsletter and the Diocesan newspaper.

How can I develop in the evangelist ministry?

You are required to complete an annual report at the end of each year with your incumbent and this is forwarded to the Warden of Evangelists. This report can be used to identify next steps in your own future development within the evangelist ministry. The Warden of Evangelists will then discuss the matter with you and how best to encourage your future development in the ministry.

Can I obtain the help of a particular evangelist?

Yes, by using the evangelist resource database you can find someone who may be able to help you with a particular need you may require for an event in your own parish.

Do I need any qualifications in order to start training?

No, you do not need any specific qualifications to train as an evangelist but please contact the Warden of Evangelists to discuss your particular situation.

Is age a barrier to training or ministry?

No, the ministry of evangelists would consider applications for training with a minimum age of sixteen. However on reaching the age of seventy you will be required to have your commission renewed on an annual basis by your incumbent and Diocesan bishop.

Do I need the permission of my incumbent or PCC to train as an evangelist?

Yes you do need the permission of your incumbent and PCC to train as an evangelist.

What if I have any special needs?

You need to provide information on your application form about your needs and how this would affect your training as an evangelist. The Warden of Evangelists will advise you on this matter and how best to proceed.

I am not from the Diocese of Rochester can I still apply for evangelist training?

You need to discuss this with the Warden of Evangelists we are open to candidates from other Dioceses.
